The hours here are a little strange, as they close during dinner time (7pm). Maybe they should extend their hours because I’m sure they would have a lot of diners during the evening! Anyway, we came here about 2 hours before I was going for dinner – so I settled for a banh mi.
I got #1 Banh Mi Dac Bet ($5- home made ham, house meat ball, vegetables and hot peppers). I have to say that this is one of the best places to have a banh mi in Vancouver – if not the best. The bread is fresh and not too overwhelming and the meat ball is fresh, flavourful and juicy. And if you really can’t stand hot peppers – make sure you ask for no hot peppers because they give you fresh, whole slices in the sandwich! For us crazies who like peppers, this is heaven!
I also ordered #42 – Dark French Iced Coffee Served with Condensed Milk aka Rocket Fuel ($3.75). As usual, it worked its charm and I was soon speaking a million miles an hour. The only downside to this was it only filled about half the glass. Maybe that’s a good thing, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to make any sense what so ever.
My dining friends ordered the #4 Banh Mi Ga ($4- Chicken, veggies and hot peppers), Spring Rolls ($7.75), #25 Small Rare Beef Pho (Pho Tai) and the most interesting dish I’ve seen in a long time: #13 – Vietnamese Ham, Bean Sprouts, Vegetables served on large rice noodles and fish sauce ($7.50).
I’d definitely recommend this place if you’re in the area, it is a great Vietnamese restaurant that isn’t strictly pho or banh mi and slightly cleaner than most places. I’d come back to try the #13 dish and of course, the delectable banh mi with fresh hot peppers. Sigh.
Compared to a lot of other Vietnamese places, I have to say this place has flavour locked down.
I’m not entirely sure whether it was because we were in a big group or if they recognized a couple of them as regulars or…maybe its just this way always – but the service was very good! They came to refill our drinks and were quite friendly. Very impressive.
Although this place seems a little more pricier than other Vietnamese places, the quality speaks for the prices. It’s still one of the cheaper meals in the city!
This place is a little pink..okay well, it’s a lot of pink. And you would think Gastrofork with it’s pink fork rating would enjoy but this was a pepto bismol kind of pink. Other than that, the place is cleaner than most dives but still quite small!
