Breakfast is an important meal, I bet you’ve heard that often. But do you know why it is? After resting, you need to replenish any of the nutrients you lost and energize for the day ahead of you. When it comes to breakfast, I’m a little all over the map.

Sometimes a breakfast can consist of good old bacon, eggs and pancakes. Sometimes it’ll be dim sum. But for most days, I like something simple that I don’t really have to be fully awake to prepare. This is where cereal and fruits come in. I’ve been trying to be more proactive in getting more fruits into my diet, so I’ve been slicing and freezing fruits for juices.

And as much as I love my kid cereal, sometimes I need a little more brain power to get through a long day ahead of me. This is where fruits and grains come in handy.

Dorset Cereals recently sent me seven (!!!) full-sized cereals to try out and enjoy. I’m going to be honest and say I’ve never really been a fan of ‘healthy’ cereal, but I was so surprised when I tasted the cereals from Dorset. Now they aren’t really cereals – they’re mostly muesli.

The seven sent to me were:

  • Simply Nutty Muesli: a blend of multi-grain flakes with whole almonds, oat flakes, dates, Brazil nuts and sunflower seeds
  • Honey Granola: a lovely blend of crunchy oats, sunflower seeds, flaked almonds, pecans and pumpkin seeds
  • Simply Delicious Muesli: a blend of raisins, sultanas, sunflower seeds, dates, Brazil nuts and roasted hazelnuts with multigrain flakes
  • Really Nutty Muesli: a crunchy mix of cashews, Brazils, hazelnuts, almonds, sultanas, dates, flame raisins and multi-grain flakes
  • Super Cranberry, Cherry & Almond Muesli: a blend of cranberries, cherries, almonds, raisins, sultanas, sunflower seeds, flame raisins and toasted cereals
  • Super High Fibre Muesli: a blend of toasted cereals with flame raisins, dates, sunflower seeds, toasted coconut and chopped roasted hazelnuts
  • Fruits, Nuts & Seeds Muesli: a delicious blend of raisins and flame raisins, dates, sultanas, banana, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, flaked almonds whole hazelnuts and multigrain flakes.

By far, my favourites were the Honey Granola and Super Cranberry, Cherry & Almond Muesli. Being a big fan of almonds must’ve swayed my choices a bit. Also, the great thing about muesli is that you don’t have to have a huge bowl full to get very full off them. I had maybe 1/2 a cup and I was extremely full and well energized for the rest of the day.

They’re quite good on their own, not too sweet but very tasty. Or you can add fresh fruit to them. I like using Almond Milk with my cereal, and it really worked well with the flavour.

You can also use the cereals in yogurt as a fuller snack or you could even make cereal bars out of them for a quick bite when you’re on the run.

I’m glad to have had a chance to try this great cereal out as it is now available in Canada. I’d definitely buy the cereal again for a great (and healthier!) breakfast.
