I’m not going to lie, I love Wendy’s salads. And yes, there is this whole stigma of “if you’re going to a fast food place, why would you get salad?” – which for the most part I agree, but Wendy’s has always had healthier options than most fast food chains including their great salads.

Not being one to be complacent, Wendy’s has recently introduced three Chef-Inspired Salads available across Canada. They are available in a full and half size and are served with freshly prepared ingredients.

All of this is part of a rebranding effort to stay current and innovate the fast food scene. Each salad was inspired by the culinary trends across the country and made with the highest quality ingredients.

The three salads are: Asian Cashew Chicken Salad, BBQ Ranch Chicken Salad and Taco Supremo Salad.

Wendy’s was very kind to drop off a salad for me to sample for lunch. I got to try the Asian Cashew Chicken Salad.

Please note that Wendy’s invited me to try their new salads and my meal was comped, but all opinions are my own.

The full size salad with dressing is only 370 calories (for anyone watching their caloric intake). This salad includes fire-roasted edamame, red peppers (sliced fresh in every Wendy’s restaurant), spicy roasted cashews dusted with garlic, onion and seasalt, fresh sliced cucumbers and warm, grilled chicken breast fillet (chopped fresh to order) on a bed of 11 different kinds of field greens. The dressing is a Light Spicy Asian Chili Vinaigrette.

The salad is really filling (and I usually inhale salads) that I couldn’t finish my last bites (which makes me pretty sad). The level of heat with the dressing might be a tad bit more spicy for some, but I absolutely loved it. I’m glad that they didn’t settle to go with a mild flavour, instead making this salad a bit more punchy. The edamame, red peppers and cucumbers made for a nice mix of flavour and weight to the salad. But the main event was definitely the chicken and cashews. I loved the crunchy cashews and the chicken was nicely grilled and still warm.

I’d like to see more fast food places reinvent their health choices because it is worth their time and effort. A lot of people are shifting towards more healthier eating and although it’s great to indulge in fast food when you’re out with a group of friends, sometimes you’ll want something that is more balanced.

And now you lucky Gastrofork readers, we’re giving you a chance to try out these delicious salads – we’ve partnered up with Wendy’s to give away FOUR $10 gift cards!
