I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting Australia yet (but it’s on the long travel list of mine!), but I came very close to it while experiencing Peaked Pies in Whistler.

These savoury meat pies have all sorts of filling from chicken mushroom and leek to butter chicken to the hopper (ground kangaroo). There’s always something interesting to try out. If savoury pies are not your thing, they also have some sweets available as well on the menu.

The space is a bit on the small side and very popular, so if you can, I’d say get it to go. They have an area to order electronically, or you can also just go lineup.

While you can get your pies as is and take away, if you’re lucky to find a spot, I’d recommend enjoying the pies peaked: the addition of mash potatoes, mushed green peas and gravy on top. It really is the best way to enjoy these pies! They are also very generous with the peaked toppings, so you’ll be full for sure!

I ordered the Traditional Aussie which consists of ground beef, onions and gravy. The pies are packed with filling – but not too salty which is nice. The crust is dense, flaky and buttery and holds up with the filling inside. I can’t say I’m too big a fan of mashed peas, but once you mix them together with the mash and gravy, it’s a better combo. I’d definitely like to come back and try their other flavours – especially since they have opened a Vancouver location!
