I’ve always been a fan of Australian style meat pies – especially from Peaked Pies in Whistler (and now in Vancouver!). Obviously, nothing can ever replace the authentic experience but I thought I’d try my hand at making one at home. It’s surprisingly easy and so delicious with an ice cold beer.

I teamed up with Granville Island Brewery to create this recipe. With this particular recipe, the  Granville Island Brewing’s Sunshine Coast Hefeweizen is fantastic. Hefeweizens originate from Germany, the direct translation is “yeast wheat”, and as you can imagine, this is a 50% malted wheat beer. The beer is amber in colour and has slight hints of sweetness as you sip on it. It’s perfect for meaty experiences like BBQs or in this case, a delicious Aussie meat pie! I love enjoying local beers, Vancouver’s beer scene is burgeoning and there’s always something new. Granville Island Brewery has been around for a long time and set the bar for Vancouver-made beer. One of my other favourite beers from them is their Lions Winter Ale – which, I hope will be coming out soon!

I’m also including a mash peas recipe, just in case you want to serve it stacked with mash potatoes, gravy and mash peas!

Aussie Meat Pie

Ingredients

500 g ground beef (or kangaroo, if you can find it!)
1 white onion, chopped
5-6 mushrooms, chopped
1 cup of water
2 beef bullion cubes
1/2 cup tomato sauce
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons of flour
1 egg, beaten for glaze
2 pie shells
2 squares of puff pastry

Procedure:

1. In a large frying pan, add oil and heat.
2. When it’s hot, add onions and cook until just slightly cooked.
3. Add protein, mix and cook until fully cooked.
4. Add mushrooms.
5. Add water, beef bullion, tomato sauce, Worcestershire, salt, pepper and flour and mix until thickened.
6. Take the filling off the heat and cool.
7. In the mean time, follow the instructions on the pie shells – I wouldn’t recommend baking it before hand. Prick the bottom of the pie shells with a fork.
8. Roll out puff pastry for the top.
9. When the filling is cool, pack it into the pie shell.
10. Cover with puff pastry and secure edges with a fork, trimming any excess dough.
11. Wash the egg over your pie crust to give it a nice golden, shiny crust.
12. Bake for 350 degrees fahrenheit for 25 minutes or until the crust is a golden brown.

Mash Peas Recipe

Ingredients

4 cups of frozen peas
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup of milk
salt and pepper to taste

Procedure:

1. Boil salted water.
2. Add the frozen peas and cook for 2-3 minutes.
3. Drain the peas.
4. In a food processor or blender, add peas, butter, milk, salt and pepper and blend until just slightly smooth.
5. The consistency should be similar to mash potatoes.

Serve with mash potatoes and gravy for a delicious and filling meal!
