Toku Japanese Restaurant is located in Lansdowne mall in the same area of the food court. If you were looking for something a bit more elevated than dining at the food court, Toku might just be the right choice for you. The interior is well appointed – comfortable seating and modern (even the washrooms are nice).

Their menu is extensive with a selection of sushi, robata (BBQ), bowls and much more.

We started off with their Ebi Mayo ($12). The ebi mayo is nicely breaded – not too much breading and the prawn has a good snap to it. The slightly tangy mayo drizzled on top helps cut the deep fried element. My only gripe is that it’s a little pricey for 5 pieces.

The next dish that arrived is the Toku Signature roll ($14) – prawn tempura and cucumber inside, topped with flamed salmon, avocado and their special sauce. The rice is a little chewy and didn’t stick together very well. The chunks of salmon on the top are formidable and the prawn tempura isn’t so bad on the inside – still crispy.

Up next is the Chawan Mushi ($6) – chawan mushi is an egg custard (although this type of egg custard is savoury). This one is served with mushroom and shrimp. The overall taste is light in flavour, I feel like it could use a bit more ingredients within it.

Up next is the Yaki Soba ($14) – made with chicken. The noodles were cooked well and there were a good mix of veggies and chicken slices. The sweet and tangy sauce overpowered this dish a bit.

Finally, the Gindara Miso – black cod marinated and grilled with miso. The black cod is tender, buttery and easy to cut through with a pair of chopsticks. I found this cod to be slightly on the fishy side in terms of taste compared to other places that make the same dish.

Overall, I feel that Toku has a good selection of items on their menu. There are many items on their menu that I feel are overpriced – but some are reasonable. There are some interesting items on their menu like Foie Gras toast and their sashimi bowls, but I’m not quite sure I’d have another reason to come back here.
