One of my favourite things about Cornucopia is that you can go beyond the glass – you learn different stories and dive into the history and culture behind what we’re sipping. The Empire Strikes Back drink seminar is exactly that kind of experience.

Led by the very knowledgeable (and entertaining!) Paul Watkin, this seminar explores how ancient empires shaped the wine we know and love today. From the Mediterranean to Central Europe and beyond, each pour is a little time capsule influenced by centuries of movement, trade, and tradition. It’s fascinating to think how the rise and fall of empires still shows up in our wine racks.

Hosted at the Whistler Conference Centre, this tasting takes you on a tour through Austria, Hungary, Spain, Germany, Greece, Italy and more, all without leaving your seat. As the patron saint of libations once said, “Today, we feast on wine!” and honestly that should be Cornucopia’s motto.

Wines We Explored and some notes:

  • Tokaji Sargamuskotaly Grand Tokaj Late Harvest 2023 – Hungary
Lusciously sweet with notes of apricot and honey – dessert in a glass without being too heavy.
  • Domaene Gobelsburg Kamptal Riesling 2023 – Austria
Bright, fresh and citrusy with a crisp mineral finish. A great intro to Austrian Riesling.
  • Quinta de Soalheiro Alvarinho Classico 2024 – Portugal
Zippy and aromatic with tropical fruit and a salty edge.
  • Louis Jadot Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2022 – France
Classic Burgundian elegance: red cherry, a little earthiness, smooth and food-friendly.
  • Lafanzis Geometria Agiorgitiko 2022 – Greece
Juicy dark berries with gentle spice – plush and approachable, a fun Greek discovery.
  • Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva 2020 – Italy
Bold and warm with red fruit, herbs and a savoury finish.
  • CVNE Vina Real Crianza 2019 – Spain
A crowd-pleasing Rioja with silky tannins, ripe berries, and a touch of vanilla from oak.
  • Palavani “Qvevri” Rkatsiteli Amber – Georgia
A traditional clay-aged amber wine – textured, tea-like tannins, dried fruit and spice.
  • Selbach Fish Riesling 2022 – Germany
Delicate fruit and refreshing acidity – a balanced, easy-drinking Riesling that still has personality.

It’s a great session if you want to expand your palate and your wine knowledge, especially if you’re like me and enjoy the why just as much as the wow.
