On some nights they have entertainment like hula dancers, burlesque dancers, musicians, etc.
The inside is everything you expect from a Tiki bar – tikis, dim lighting, bamboo, Hawaiian memorabilia. It’s kitschy, but in a wonderfully refreshing way. I say that because off the top of my head, I can’t think of another place in Vancouver that can give you this type of experience – of walking into a place and forgetting you’re actually in Vancouver. I almost want to say its like a dinner theatre experience, but its just so hard to explain it to properly do it justice. It’s an experience and it’s one that you should experience at least once in your life.
We got there early enough that we were fortunate to be one of the first to be seated – everyone else outside had to wait about 2 hours. This is most likely because it is their anniversary weekend, but I do hear that this place gets very busy, especially on weekends so plan ahead and try to make reservations.
Our MO this trip was to try the bowls and that we did. We tried the Volcano Bowl ($40) and the Mystery Bowl ($22). When you order one of the bowls, they bang a gong and there is lights and smoke as they bring it to you – it’s quite a theatrical experience!
The Volcano Bowl is a huge, HUGE bowl mixed with mezcal, overproof rum and a housemade six spice syrup. The bowl itself is very strong, so be aware! I liked the spicy flavour of it, it definitely packed a punch but was still quite enjoyable. It says to share with 4 or more people, and it definitely was perfect for the 5 of us.
We also ordered the Mystery Bowl, which is created for at least two people to share. It’s made with juice, rum and their secret spice. I have to say that it was much easier sipping on the Mystery Bowl, simply because it tasted like juice! Though don’t be fooled, there is alcohol in this and will get you tipsy pretty quick!
I’m so excited to come back and try out more drinks and maybe some of their food – I think we might be heading there sometime in the next week, so I will update this post if we go!
