I had the pleasure of travelling up to Whistler during non-peak season, and let me tell you, I love the relaxing atmosphere. It’s not incredibly busy, so you’re never waiting too long for anything and the village is peaceful – perfect for a midday stroll. The only thing you might want to watch out for are the bears who also seem to know that they’re more free to roam around during this time of year as well.
The other fantastic thing about travelling to Whistler in May/June is that there are so many great spots that offer Chef’s menu which is a great deal for 3-4 course meals. One of which is Sidecut – a beautiful and elegant steakhouse located in the Four Seasons. The Chef’s Menu Tasting is a 4 course meal that costs $59.

I started off with freshly shucked oysters. Oysters on this side of the ocean never cease to amaze – it had a nice fresh taste to it without any grit.

Next was the octopus – it’s always great to see this on the menu and it’s always a treat when it’s done right – which it is here! The tentacle is slightly charred but had a nice snap-back texture to it. The tomato, almond and chili complimented the octopus with their sweet, salty and savoury balance.

My main was the Canada Prime Striploin in a Sergant pepper dust and served with morels and porcini cream. The portion is fair – the meat itself is tender and had a bit of fat on it which made it very delicious. The porcini cream just created a richness to the dish.

Finally, for dessert, I went with the New York style cheesecake. Fresh berries and tart flavours worked well with the cake.
I would definitely recommend visiting Sidecut if you’re ever in Whistler – and especially when they have their tasting menu. The value was good for the amount and it was nice to have an upscale dinner at a fraction of the price.
