A Granville Island institution, The Sandbar Seafood Restaurant is participating in Dine Out Vancouver once again. I was invited to preview their $35 menu, here are my thoughts:
The APPETIZERS
Sablefish Croquette miso aioli – this dish is a play on the Japanese croquette and served with a very buttery flavoured fish. I didn’t feel like the particular flavour of the fish stood out, which is a bit of a shame since it’s a nice fish.
Beet & Arugula Salad – This salad is served with goat cheese and fig balsamic vinaigrette. It’s a nice, brightly flavoured salad.
Clam Chowder – The clam chowder is housemade and quite nice – not too salty and had a nice balance of flavours and items in the chowder itself.
The ENTREES
The Cioppino is served with prawns, mussels, clams, cod and snow crab.
6 oz Prime New York Striploin – The striploin is Alderwood grilled and served with market vegetables and roasted potatoes. The striploin was served medium rare and was tender, juicy and had a nice peppery sear to it.
Sapa Rau Bowl – served with coconut jasmine rice, lemongrass yogurt, pickled papaya, mushrooms, yams, fresh vegetables, cashews and a Singapore sauce.
DESSERTS
Chocolate Truffle Cake – a nice, indulgent way to finish off the meal.
Buttermilk Panna cotta berry compote, citrus crumble – this lighter option for dessert is a good balance of sweet and citrus.
You can sub some of the items on the menu for an extra $10. These include:
Crab Crusted BC Lingcod forno baked, market vegetables, coconut jasmine rice, beurre blanc
Sesame Crusted Albacore Tuna seared rare, soy mustard, wasabi, cucumber salsa
Overall, the restaurant provides good value at the $35 price point.
