You wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve googled the title of this post. I think its difficult to find a great resource because so many babies are at different points of solids at one year of age. Winston is a little bit behind, so he was still having purees at 12 months of age (while slowly being introduced to soft foods).
Here is the list of what I’ve given Winston so far and the things he liked. I try to introduce different types of flavours to him (minus as much salt and sugar as possible) and to keep most of his food fairly wholesome. Also, disclaimer and a bit of a duh! – I am not a medical professional and this is definitely not professional advice, but just sharing what I give to my little one for food.
I try to follow the Health Canada Food Guide for kids with vegetables, fruits, carbohydrates and protein served at every meal – whether or not Winston wants to eat any or all of it is a different story!
Also another quick note that some of these links are for Amazon Affiliates, I may make a couple cents here and there from any purchases you make :3
Snacks:
- Baby Gourmet Banana Berry Greek Yogurt Mushies
- Puff Stars (Gerber and PC Organics is what I usually go for)
- Baby Gourmet Puffies (Broccoli and Cheese is Winston’s go to, but these Apple Kale ones are good too)
Meals:
Carbs:
- Silver Dollar sized Pancakes (sometimes with unsalted butter or even a thin layer of peanut butter)
- Homemade banana bread
- Spaghetti (whole wheat), rotini (with added fibre), macaroni elbows – all boiled at least 11 minutes for softness and cut short/halved
- Toast with Butter (multigrain or quinoa bread with unsalted butter)
- Udon noodles with butter – you can add some soft, boiled vegetables as well
- Pesto (basil) with bowtie pasta – I use organic brown bowtie pasta made for kids
Proteins:
- Scrambled eggs made with olive oil and whole milk
- Roasted chicken
- Avocado, cubed to half an inch
- Yogurt (Minigo has the least amount of sugar, or I go with greek yogurt (like Liberte) with high fat and low sugar)
- Egg Salad (boiled eggs, mayonnaise, no salt added – sometimes I put pepper and paprika)
- Tuna Salad (low sodium canned flaked tuna, mayo, slivers of celery is optional, no salt added – I add pepper)
- Peanut butter and jam open faced sandwich (I use peanut butter that’s just peanuts and jam that has less sugar added to it)
- Spaghetti with ground chicken/turkey/beef and tomato sauce
- “Pizza” – small naan round, tomato sauce, shredded cheese, ham (less salt and organic)
- French Toast (whole grain bread, egg, a bit of vanilla, cinnamon, milk – make sure you cook it well)
- Chicken noodle soup deconstructed (noodles – usually spaghetti noodles for me, chicken – shredded or ground, carrots cut small pieces, low sodium chicken broth)
- Cheese string/cheese blocks – Winston loves aged Cheddar
- Mac and cheese – elbow macaroni whole grain, shredded cheese, milk, pepper and some flour
- Thai Peanut noodles – I use Everland Thai Peanut Sauce (I strain out some of the peanuts) and medium thickness rice noodles that I cook for a little longer so they’re softer.
- Scrambled Eggs – I add milk when I scramble them and no salt
- Tamago style egg – whenever we order sushi, Winston loves the tamago nigiri, so he ends up eating all of it!
- Tofu (firm) – Tofu is so good and so easy to give to kids – you can add any sauce or vegetables to bulk up the meal
- Baked Salmon – I bake salmon and either add mayonnaise or low sodium teriyaki sauce and flake them with a fork for him
- Homemade dumplings – Using ground turkey or chicken and adding cilantro, I wrap them in wonton wraps and boil them, usually serve them with noodles and some broth.
- I also use pouch foods on the go (or if I don’t have enough time to cook) including Love Child Organics and Baby Gourmet ones.
Veggies/Fruits:
- Blueberries halved
- Raspberries halved
- Strawberries cut into small bite sized pieces
- Banana, cut into small bite sized pieces
- Watermelon, cut into small bite sized pieces
- Applesauce
- Carrots, boiled sliced small
- Squash, boiled and cut into bite sized pieces
- Cherries – cut into quarters
- Broccoli – cut into small, bite sized pieces
- Kiwi – cut into small, bite sized pieces
- Mango – cut into small bite sized pieces
- Mashed sweet yams with maple syrup – you can make these without maple syrup, they’re just as delicious
- Mashed potatoes with butter – I use unsalted butter
- Peas – Winston’s not too huge a fan of peas but here and there I can get him to eat them
What do you feed your little ones? I’m curious to see what else is out there – I really want to introduce so many different flavours and cuisines to Winston, so I’d love your input!
