Green Basil is a Thai restaurant located right next to Sushi Garden on Kingsway, so I bet they get a lot of spill over for people who don’t want to wait for a table at Sushi Garden. However, they do have an excellent lunch special which is an appetizer (usually a spring roll), an item on their lunch menu and rice for $7.50. Great if you’re working in the area or picking up something quick for school (BCIT!).
Tonight we ordered Gaaeng Dang ($13.95 – red curry) and Khaao Phat Sap-Bpa-Roht ($14.95 – Pineapple Fried Rice).
The curry was a decent size – about the same at any other Thai place you go to. This one consisted of sliced beef, red and green peppers, bamboo shoots and onions. The curry was thick and had coconut milk in it, and red curries are always the mildest (then yellow, green being the spiciest). The beef was tender and the curry was flavourful. I like curries that are more saucier than runny, so I enjoyed this dish.
The Pineapple fried rice is a staple among Thai places and served beautifully on half a pineapple’s shell. They piled the rice high for this dish and it was very fragrant, sweet and salty. There were diced red and green peppers, onions and thick and long pineapple slices. They also serve peanuts, raisins and pork floss on the side. Your best bet is to take a little from the top of the pineapple rice (so it won’t fall over!) and then mix the sides in.
For dessert, we ordered deep fried bananas. I absolutely LOVE deep fried bananas because I’m normally intolerant to raw bananas, so to have this is a treat. They serve it with vanilla ice cream, my husband likes it this way, but I prefer it with mango ice cream.
I always find the service good here and the price is comparable to Thai places. They have free refills on pop and they will happily refill it when you’re nearing empty.
Check out their website here. They also offer delivery!
