What does Penguin Point and the Vancouver Aquarium have to do with a food blog? I found myself thinking that the day of the Penguin Point media event. Conservation. The Vancouver Aquarium is a non-profit society “dedicated to the conservation of aquatic life” – which includes the six new African penguins that were born in captivity in Boston’s New England Aquarium. This endangered species have dwindled to about 20% of their population in the 1900s.

The Aquarium has a specific conservation program called Ocean Wise to educate the public on sustainable seafood. Ocean Wise symbols can be found at restaurants and suppliers to help you make sustainable choices. We might not see it, but marine life is rapidly declining and if we’re not careful, see a collapse to world-wide fisheries by 2048!

Ocean Wise has quickly caught on with over 350 partners from the west coast to the east. Off their fact sheet, check out these unsustainable seafood species: Black Tiger Prawns, Ahi Tuna, Squid, Sea scallops, Sablefish…just to name a few.

Anyway, check out the website to learn more about Ocean Wise.

The Penguins are a cute lil bunch and the media event was great. We had some good food while viewing the amazing life in the Aquarium.

I was invited by the Vancouver Aquarium to the media event and it was not expected for me to write about the event.
