As you may or may not know, my sister Nathalie is getting hitched this year. During their search to find a suitable place for their lunch reception, they came across Seasons in the Park which is located within the iconic Queen Elizabeth Park. If you’ve never been, it’s got an amazing skyline of the park and onwards to downtown Vancouver. They were kind enough to ask me to join them for their initial tasting/menu selection brunch and of course I was very happy to oblige.

We started off with Seasons Mushrooms which were stuffed with crab, shrimp and cream cheese ($14). They were delicious. I’ve had them previously at the Teahouse (where I held my wedding reception) and I recommended them to mushroom loving Nathalie (hmm..that doesn’t sound right).

We ordered three main dishes: The Miso Marinated Sablefish ($36), the Smoked Salmon Benedict ($17) and the Steak and Eggs ($23).

The sablefish was the highlight of our experience – this was also one of the offerings I chose for my wedding reception and was the most popular one. Their sablefish is tender, meaty and has that subtle miso taste to it. During our brunch, it was served with rice and seasonal vegetables but I think I prefer it the way that it’s served at the Teahouse with fingerling potatoes. I found the rice was a little overcooked and a bit on the bland side.

The Smoked Salmon Benedict is two bennys with tasty smoked salmon, capers, creme fraiche, red onion and sitting atop a potato cake. It’s sitting next to a bed of arugula. This was my second favourite, as I feel that it is a very classic West Coast dish to serve to our East Coast family coming in for the wedding. I’m not too sure how I feel about the huge bed of arugula, but I’m guessing they’re going with healthy, I would’ve liked to see a bit more punch – maybe citrus notes in the salad to brighten up the overall dish.

The Steak and Eggs (unfortunately not pictured) is a 5oz New York Striploin served with chive scrambled eggs and roasted potatoes. My initial thoughts about this dish was that it was a lot bigger than I was expecting the steak to be. I liked that they did not cut up the steak to let it keep it’s moisture. Plating wise, I feel like the scrambled eggs could’ve been made a bit more fluffier, but that’s just from an aesthetic point of view – overall the eggs were what you were expecting of a scramble. I guess if their intention was to mimic this popular dish served world wide, then it makes a little more sense. After a bit of a discussion, Nathalie and Josh selected this as their second option as they wanted to offer some surf and turf rather than keep it all fish dishes (just in case anyone was not a big fan of fish). I thought this was a good idea.

And of course, we had to have dessert because no meal is complete without it. We ordered the tiramisu and it was nice. Creamy and fluffy, it had a decent weight to it. The lady fingers were more soft than spongy and it was plated pretty nicely too.

We really enjoyed our brunch experience and I think it helped solidified their confidence in their lunch choice! Our server was pretty helpful, guiding them through the menu and the wines as well.
