If you’re a seafood lover and happen to be in the Vancouver area in May, you won’t want to miss the Steveston Spot Prawn & Seafood Celebration.
From May 16 to June 18, the Steveston Spot Prawn and Seafood Celebration celebrates this coastal culture with a variety of events and activities, including fresh seafood brought into Fisherman’s Wharf daily, demonstrations from professional chefs and locally caught seafood (by Steveston Fishers) featured on participating restaurant menus as part of our Dine About promotion.
This festival is dedicated to the local spot prawn and seafood industry and takes place in the charming fishing village of Steveston, located just outside of Vancouver. Visitors can enjoy freshly caught spot prawns and other seafood dishes from local vendors and restaurants.
We were invited to a media preview to try all the delicious seafood!
Our first dish was the Spot Prawn Ceviche by Steveston Seafood House, by the wonderful Chef Sushila Narain. I feel like a good dish of ceviche always evokes patio season in my head.
Second dish was Pan Seared Spot Prawns by Britannia Brewing, served by the Chef Vincent. I hadn’t realized there was a brewery in Steveston, so definitely will be back for their food and beer. Would love to try their Stone’s Throw Peach Wit, which is a light and fruity Belgian style Wit.
This last dish was the Spot Prawn & Cherry Gazpacho by Globe@YVR, from Chef Harris Sakalis. The sauce was my favourite and I had to find more bread for it!
We went to the Fisherman’s Wharf after to learn more about spot prawns. I didn’t know you could eat them without having to cook them, which seems unreal. (I’m a bit more on the side of animal lover, so this was slightly horrifying even though I love eating shrimp!)
The Steveston Spot Prawn & Seafood Celebration is a great opportunity to indulge in some of the freshest seafood around while also supporting the local community. Be sure to check it out if you’re in the area in May/June!
