Sure, pie is definitely not a new thing but it has become more popular in recent years again. While there are one or two established joints to get a great pie, Tartine Bread and Pies is a newly opened cafe that could find it’s way to the ranks of Vancouver’s best.
First of all, it’s getting a little ridiculous how much a slice of pie can cost you – I’ve seen it range from $7-12 just for a slice of pie. You’re looking at an upward of $20 for whole gourmet pies. And while maybe in some context, the price is justified for organic or local reasons, my wallet still can’t justify it on a regular basis. Tartine smashes this with pies that are under $5 a slice. Their whole pies are $18. These prices are so much more reasonable.
But while some don’t mind paying the premium price, we often wonder if we are getting value, we must be losing out on some other component – like taste. Again, another feat easily overcome here at Tartine.
Brian and I love our Banana Cream pies and so I had to get one to try, Nathalie ordered the apple pie and a blueberry pie.
I can’t speak for her experience with her pie, but the banana cream pie was so nice and fresh with bananas and a fantastic whipped cream – this has easily taken the top honours for my favourite banana cream pie place in Vancouver. While it’s fairly tucked away between Thurlow and Burrard on Beach Avenue, it definitely is worth the visit.
