If dessert could be considered a meal, it would make me (along with countless others, I’m sure) one happy camper. It would also make me a diabetic, so I guess there are reasons why desserts can’t be a thing. If they were a thing though, how marvellous would it be? I don’t know about you, but my sweet tooth has one weakness and that weakness is chocolate. I love it, it’s my go-to dessert when perusing a dessert menu. There is always room for chocolate.

That’s why when I heard Cacao70 was opening a shop here in Vancouver, I was excited! When was the last time we had a cafe dedicated to chocolate? I’m thinking Death By Chocolate days..those were long ago.
Cacao70 features a variety of different chocolates from all over the world in a drinking chocolate format, fondue, parfaits, waffles, cakes, ice cream, hot chocolates, milkshakes, smoothies, iced coffees and yes, their famous dessert pizzas.

We ordered the Sharing Sharing For Two or More ($33.95), the Classic Spicy Hot Chocolate ($9.25) and the 53.8% Belgian drinking chocolate.
We wanted to try a lot of the menu and we found that the Sharing Sharing For Two or More covered a good portion of it. It comes with a quarter of the 12” triple chocolate pizza, banana split waffle, fresh strawberries, graham crackers, brownie bites, chocolate wafers, marshmallows, vanilla ice cream drizzled in chocolate and milk chocolate fondue for dipping.

Dipping the marshmallows into the fondue and cramming it into the graham wafers was great. The chocolate isn’t overly sweet but you still have that nice decadent heaviness to it. We dipped the strawberries, brownies and chocolate wafers into the fondue as well.

The waffle is simple and drizzled in chocolate along with the banana and vanilla ice cream it’s served with. It was a bit on the soggy side, but with the ice cream and chocolate dipped into it, it wasn’t too bad.
The triple chocolate pizza felt a bit underwhelming to me, I think maybe the other pizzas with different toppings might be a bit more interesting – the chocolate marshmallow pizza and chocolate hazelnut pizza for example.
I think if you were feeling indecisive, the sharing idea is a good one, but I think there are stronger items on the menu. For instance, I’d probably want to go back and try their Flaming Turtle Chocolate Fondue.
That being said, what I really enjoyed were their chocolate drinks. I ordered the Classic Spicy Hot Chocolate, which is the perfect amount of spice. They give you a bit on the side to add more, but it really is just perfectly flavoured. The amount given is very generous too and you could probably have it on it’s own. I would definitely come back to try their other hot chocolates.

Finally, drinking chocolate. Brian ordered the 53.8% Belgian drinking chocolate (he’s not a fan of dark chocolate). I thought it was a good balance, neither too sweet or too bitter. If I were to go back, I would want to try their darkest – 76% Equator and see how that compares.
Overall, I’m excited to have Cacao 70 here in the city, I will definitely be back to try more of the menu items. I would recommend coming to Cacao 70 for after dinner desserts or to grab a nice drinking chocolate to enjoy. Treat yo self.
