While I was in Seattle for PAX, we were always on the search for a quick, delicious meal. One place that I researched before heading down was Homegrown. Homegrown is not just another trendy sandwich shop – it is conscious of its footprints from the vegetables being unearthed to each location. It’s details like how the animals are being raised, being aware of growing fruits and vegetables in a healthier way for the planet without the use of chemicals, keeping supplies local and certified organic. At the store level, they look to be as low-impact as they can using reclaimed and recycled building materials, energy efficient lighting and 100% compostable and reusable materials.
We took a quick 5 minute walk from the Washington Convention Centre to their Capitol Hill (Melrose Market) location. I’ve never been in here before, and it’s an interesting use of space – different artisan shops and a butcher shop – very cool.
We ordered two sandwiches – Chicken Pesto and Daily Special.
The Chicken Pesto is made with roast chicken breast, homemade pesto, roasted red peppers and roasted garlic aioli and spinach.
The Daily Special (of which I’ve forgotten the name of already) is roast chicken breast, bacon and greens with a BBQ sauce.
I thought the BBQ chicken sandwich was very flavourful – slightly smokey and packed more taste. The chicken is still tender and juicy and the sauce is a bit spicy but sweet as well.
The Chicken Pesto has a nice, lighter taste – the pesto is almost creamy and blends well with the roasted garlic aioli. The chicken on this sandwich is tender as well.
This was one of the highlights of my eats on my recent Seattle trip, I would definitely come back for a lunch-time sandwich.
