Known for the Neapolitan style pizza, pastas and the infamous Nutella calazone, Novo also prides themselves in providing the freshest ingredients for their dishes. To that extent, they make many of their ingredients (including their sausages) in-house.
Now before we go further, it’s disclaimer time. This lunch was provided in-kind by the restaurant and I was not required to write a review.
The space is open: plenty of high top tables for a more relaxed bar feel and a seating area for bigger groups and families. They have a big fire oven that burns over 900 degrees (if I remember correctly!) meaning the pizzas cook in a matter of minutes.
Our server gave me a couple suggestions for which pizza to try but when she was describing their Mushroom pizza, I was sold. With a handful of different types of mushrooms soaked in truffle oil and fontina cheese – it was a winning combo.
When it arrived, it was a fairly big portion! The aroma wafting from the pizza was delicious – the smell of truffle, mushroom and the cheese – so good. I took my first bite and the mushroom flavour literally melted in my mouth. There was a modest amount of cheese and I appreciated it because the pizza wasn’t overbearing or disguised with its taste.
I’m not a big cheese know-it-all – but Fontina cheese is creamy and nutty. This is perfect with the mix of mushrooms in the pizza.
Vincent ordered the Prawn and Fennel Salad which features “candied almonds, champagne vinaigrette and oranges”. These prawns are major, these aren’t the tiny little ones you see on other salads! I got to try a little bit and I loved the dressing – it had a little bit of bite (maybe from the oranges as well). It made the salad crispier, cleaner and appetizing to eat.
Our final part of the meal was Nutella Calazone. This is probably one of the items that sold me and one of their signature dishes. Served with creme fraiche (made, literally fresh when ordered) – this is definitely an indulgent item.
I think this item could be ordered as a snack or as an actual menu item as opposed to a dessert item. Think along the lines of a sweet crepe but heavier. The dough is crispy, airy and salty which help balance the sweetness of what’s inside. The inside is- I’m assuming nutella- but has chopped hazelnuts for a great crunch and heartier taste.
I would definitely come back here again to try out their pasta and maybe another one of their pizzas!
