It’s been revered as one of the best places for sushi in the GVRD and it’s worth the drive all the way out to Port Coquitlam, but does Sushi K Kamizato live up to the hype? I’m going to say yes, yes it does. Unassumingly nestled in a strip mall, Sushi K Kamizato may not look like much from the outside but it’s what is on the inside that counts.

As we waited for them to open, I got a couple puzzled stares as to why there was a lineup outside of a random sushi place in the middle of a strip mall – but I’d be happy to tell people it’s worth the wait!

They open up and we’re seated. The space is a little small – maybe fitting 20-25 people at the most inside at one time? The ambiance – interesting. Exposed brick with different types of albums – mostly rock hanging in the back.

Our order today included the Albacore Crunch Roll (a special), Toro Nigiri, a Seared California roll and seared Yam Tempura Roll and the Goodbye Yellow Brick Roll.

YES, I ordered a california roll and yam tempura roll. It’s very strange to see me order these at sushi restaurants but it came highly recommended, so I couldn’t say no!

And guess what? They were so delicious. The California Roll ($3.95) is made with real crab and delicious, creamy avocado. The searing on the top just makes this roll that much more better. I would order this again in a heartbeat.

The Yam Tempura roll ($3.95) we ordered seared as well (you have to specifically ask for it seared, otherwise it comes plain). And it was also delicious – slightly smoky taste with a nice crunch from the tempura.

Our Toro nigiri was next ($2.95). You can never go wrong with tuna belly in my mind, and again the searing on it (which again, we requested) – made it that much better.

The Goodbye Yellow Brick Roll ($9.95) has yam tempura with minced crab, ebi and mango salsa on top. Mango and raspberry puree drizzle. An interesting combination of flavours and textures – sweet and savoury. It was very refreshing with the mango salsa atop.

Finally, we decided we wanted to try one more roll – this was on the daily specials board: Albacore Crunch Roll – Seasoned tuna pattie with crunchy sweet bits. This one definitely rounded out our dining experience and was an interesting assortment of flavour – I really enjoyed the crunchy bits!

I would definitely like to come back, maybe with more people in tow so that we can try more items from here – but I am definitely a fan! Sushi K Kamizato ranks fairly high in my sushi list of love!
